September 2019 - In October 2018, started at Walibi in Biddinghuizen, the construction of Untamed, the first hybrid roller coaster of Europe - a roller coaster with steel rails on a wooden frame. On 1 July 2019, Untamed was opened to the public.
Building a roller coaster is a complicated process. Certainly if the Robin Hood wooden roller coaster is used as the basis for the foundation of the Untamed steel rails. Robin Hood's wooden frame is, as it were, recycled. By removing, widening, reinforcing and expanding certain parts of the wooden frame, a new track has been created with various turned bends and a free fall of 35.4 meters.
To strengthen the construction of the new roller coaster, Zuidberg Staalservice from Ens produced ledgers: horizontal steel beams on which the rails of the roller coaster are mounted. As some bends run at oblique angles, not all ledgers are of the same shape. Therefore, all ledgers are provided with a unique code. As a result, it was immediately clear during construction which ledger had to be placed where and the construction could proceed quickly and efficiently.
Durable corrosion protection
The ledgers, consisting of 1D material and U-profiles in various sizes, are hot-dip galvanised by Rotocoat so that they are permanently protected against the weather. This was a unique project for Zuidberg Staalservice and Rotocoat, and both companies hope that Walibib visitors will enjoy this thrill ride for years to come.
Making of video
